Zhanara Akhmet, a citizen of Kazakhstan and blogger living in Ukraine, who seeks asylum in this country, can be extradited to Kazakhstan. On May 14, the Supreme Court of Ukraine satisfied the cassation appeal of the Ukrainian State Migration Service about the refusal to grant refugee status for Zhanara Akhmet and her son. Akhmet fled Kazakhstan in March 2017 with her son, who at the time was nine years old, stating that she feared for her safety. Before her escape, Zhanara Akhmet was on probation control after being conditionally released from prison, where she was serving time on fraud charges. Akhmet calls the case against her fabricated. In Ukraine, she continued to write critical posts on social media about the leadership of Kazakhstan and took part in demonstrations in support of activists persecuted in Kazakhstan.
