On May 7, police searched Zateyev's home in St. Petersburg and took him to Moscow for interrogation. He was later charged under Article 239.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (participation in the activities of a non-profit organisation infringing upon the personality and rights of citizens). The journalist was detained until the trial. On May 11, the Basmanny Court of Moscow imposed a ban on certain actions against Zateyev. He is prohibited from leaving his home between 8 PM and 8 AM until July 6, 2022, from using the internet, communicating with witnesses in the case and other suspects, and attending meetings of the Vesna movement.
