Incident date: August 9, 2023

Attack type:

  • Criminal/administrative prosecution excluding (1), (2) and (3)

Who attacked: Authorities

Source: Vecherniye Vedomosti's Telegram channel

Location: Russia, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Yekaterinburg

Additional information:

The Urals-based media outlet Vecherniye Vedomosti was fined for «discrediting» the army (Article 20.3.3 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Russian Federation) because of its posts about actions against the war with Ukraine, for which it had already been fined before. Employees of the Sverdlovsk Center for Combating Extremism found 15 publications that, in their opinion, violated the law, four of which were reposts of other media outlets and Telegram channels. The editorial staff of Vecherniye Vedomosti links the prosecution to a story about the corruption of law enforcers in the case of the murder of businessman Alexey Zubakin in Ekaterinburg in 2000.
