On May 10th, at about 11 o'clock, Sharip Kurakbaev, a correspondent for Aniz Adam magazine, arrived at the Abai Opera and Ballet Theatre in Almaty to cover the unsanctioned rally "Stop torture against political prisoners and release them." Even before the rally, the police approached the journalist. Kurakbaev presented them with a service certificate, as well as an editorial assignment. Nevertheless, he and several dozen people were taken to the Almaly district police department. All the detainees' personal details were recorded and they were released shortly without any claims. Those who did not have documents were detained until the circumstances and their identity were clarified.
