A criminal case was opened against the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Kondopozhsky Krai”, Sergei Kononov, for disseminating false information in the media, defaming the honour and dignity of another person, or undermining their reputation (Part 2 Article 128.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Kononov was accused of circulating false information about one of the candidates for Karelia’s Legislative Assembly during last year's election campaign. The case closed 19 months later.
