In July 2019 Khumaira Bakhtiyar, a Tajik journalist living in exile who had recently received asylum in an EU country, claimed that Tajik от представителей власти had followed and intimidated her family over the last few months as revenge for her critical articles. In December 2018 Bakhtiyar's father told her over the phone that a criminal case had been opened against her. She was charged with "public calls for the violent overthrow of the constitutional order in Tajikistan," a charge that carries up to 15 years in prison, adding that she denies the charges and believes they are revenge for her reporting and meetings with Tajik opposition figures at European events.
