In January local courts sentenced Fuad Gakhramanly, a commentator for the newspaper "Azadliq" (who is also deputy chairman of the opposition party "People's Front Azerbaijan") to ten years imprisonment. Gakramanly was arrested in 2016. He was found guilty of failure to comply with legal commandments by authorities, calling for mass unrest, openly speaking out against the state and inciting religious hatred. Gakhramanly denied all accusations and said the arrest was connected to his critical position. Gakhramanly was freed in 2019.
