On 1 April, Novaya Gazeta reported on the mass detention and torture of Chechens suspected of having a non-traditional sexual orientation. The editors were worried for their safety. Adam Shahidov, an adviser to the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov, publicly accused the Novaya Gazeta team of defamation and made clear that they were "enemies of our faith and our homeland."
