A court found Ali Feruz guilty of violating immigration rules (a lack of a passport, which had been stolen in 2012) and ordered his expulsion to Uzbekistan. On 4 August, the European Court of Human Rights imposed a ban on the expulsion. On January 24, 2018, the Supreme Court of Russia ordered a review of the decision to deport the journalist. On November 22, 2017, Basmanny Court fined Ali Feruz for illegally working in Moscow, and on February 1, 2018, Novaya Gazeta was fined for collaborating with the journalist.
