Regional Duma deputy Sergey Kurikhin succeeded in his appeal to overturn the decision to close the Vilkov case. The journalist will be tried again under Part 5 of Article 128.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (libel with an accusation of a serious crime). The case was opened in 2015 for publications about Kurikhin's possible involvement in murder, extortion, racketeering, and drug trafficking. Vilkov was acquitted in the case, but the verdict was later overturned.
