Smirnov and his colleagues were detained at the Moscow headquarters of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for single pickets supporting the journalist and municipal deputy Ilya Azar, who was arrested for 15 days. Smirnov was released from the police with protocols under part 5 of Article 20.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (violation of picketing rules) and Article 3.18.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (violation of the self-isolation regime). On March 26, 2021, the court cancelled the 4,000 rubles fine to Smirnov for violating the self-isolation regime.
