The main investigative department of the central office of the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus initiated several criminal cases against blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky. One of the cases was initiated under Part 3 of Article 130 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus on inciting social hatred and on calls to commit violence against the law enforcers. The maximum punishment under this article is imprisonment for up to 12 years. Another case is on preparation of mass riots (Article 13 and Part 2 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus). The maximum penalty under this article is imprisonment for up to eight years.
