The Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation has declared the founder of the human rights movement Russia Behind Bars Olga Romanova a so-called «foreign agent». The movement itself has been in the status of a «foreign agent» since 2018. The organisation is engaged in protecting the rights of detainees and prisoners in Russian pre-trial detention centres, prisons, and colonies. In particular, since the summer of 2022, Romanova and Russia Behind Bars have actively covered the recruitment of prisoners from colonies for the war in Ukraine — first by PMC Wagner and then by the Russian Ministry of Defence.
