The Russian Ministry of Justice has added journalist Nikita Smagin, a former TASS correspondent in Iran, to its register of “foreign agents.” According to the Ministry, Smagin “disseminated false information about Russian politics,” was involved in creating and distributing materials for “foreign agents” and “undesirable organisations,” and “engaged with foreign entities.” In its response to Smagin’s lawsuit, the Ministry clarified that these foreign entities include the Caspian Broadcasting Company (Azerbaijan), the Carnegie Foundation, the publications The Insider and Meduza, and the Dozhd TV channel.
