On 24 October 2023, the journalist Măriuța Nistor was verbally attacked after attempting to ask questions to Ion Chicu, a former Prime Minister and current president of the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova (PDCM), a political party of the opposition that is not represented in Parliament. Nistor had called Chicu ahead of upcoming local elections to ask about the composition of PDCM electoral lists. According to the journalist, the politician was initially polite when speaking to her, however he hung up as soon as he understood he was speaking to a reporter from Ziarul de Gardă, the online outlet Nistor works for. Nistor then sent the questions by text message. In his reply, Chicu called Nistor a "media escort, not a reporter", and termed Ziarul de Gardă a "media brothel".
