Founder of the website Azadinfo.az Mahir Alekperov was sentenced on Tuesday by the Nasimi District Court of Baku to 3 years and 6 months in prison. During the trial, Alekperov was found guilty under Article 182.1 (extortion) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan. As previously reported by law enforcement agencies, Alekperov was accused of distributing intimate videos about the leader of the Binagadi district organisation of the ruling party Yeni Azerbaijan Ramiz Geyushev. Before distributing the video, Alekperov extorted AZN 2,000 from Gayushov. On September 8, 2022, Alekperov was detained. As for the victim, Ramiz Geyushev was expelled from the party for compromising the authorities.
