On March 4, the Tashkent Region Department of Internal Affairs reported that blogger Lemara Mirzaakhmedova (pseudonym Emine Karamanova) was detained on suspicion of embezzlement and document forgery. Karamanova often criticised local officials, raised various social problems, and worked with the complaints of citizents. On October 12, the Zangiota District Criminal Court of the Tashkent Region found her guilty under Paragraphs A and D of Part 3 of Article 139 (libel, connected with accusations of committing a grave or especially grave crime; for selfish or other base motives), Paragraph 2 of Article 140 (insult in printed or otherwise reproduced form, including posted in the media, telecommunications networks or on the Internet), and Paragraph A of Part 3 of Article 165, (extortion on a particularly large scale) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and sentenced her to 7 years and 6 months of prison.
