By decision of the Jalal-Abad Сity Сourt, the journalist was arrested until January 28, 2022. Bazarkulov is known for his criticism of events on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border related to the armed conflicts in Batken, in the south of the country and delimitation, as well as the personnel policy of the current authorities. Bazarkulov was detained at 4 AM in his apartment in Bishkek by armed masked men who introduced themselves as employees of the State Committee of National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic. The apartment was searched; however, nothing was found. Afterwards, the journalist was taken to the city of Jalal-Abad in the south of the country. According to the reporter's wife, he was detained because of an alleged violation of the law during a tender for video equipment held by the Jalal-Abad regional television channel in 2015-2016, when Bazarkulov was the head of this TV and radio company.
