On the morning of May 19, a man in civilian clothes who introduced himself as an electrician knocked on the door of Dzhumayev’s apartment asking for help; according to a source familiar with Dzhumayev’s case, when Dzhumayev opened the door, several law enforcement officers burst into the apartment, twisted his arms, took him outside and pushed him into a waiting car. According to this source, Dzhumayev’s parents searched for him in various state institutions for five days before authorities called them and informed them that he was in custody. The Committee to Protect Journalists reported that a court on May 23 remanded Dzhumayev in custody for two months pending investigation. CPJ was unable to ascertain whether the detention period had been formally extended.
