Police detained the journalist while he was covering a protest against the presidential election results and the security forces' violence. He was taken to the police department, where a protocol was drawn up on him for participating in an unauthorized event (Article 23.34 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Republic of Belarus). At the police department, the journalist was forced to stand for 12 hours in the street at sub-zero temperatures, «facing the wall, hands up», and was hit for trying to stretch his arms. He was held in the detention center until the trial. On November 18, the court found Ihar Karney guilty and arrested him for 10 days.
