It became known that the convicted journalist Ihar Karnei was kept in a cell-type facility in penal colony № 17 for more than 4 months, which is a punitive measure. In early July, after the mandatory quarantine upon arrival, Karnei was placed in the colony’s punitive isolation centre for a few days, after which he was immediately placed in the cell block. The period of isolation was supposed to end in August, but in October. It became known that the political prisoner had not returned to the detachment: the punishment was extended, and he will stay in the punishment centre until the end of January 2025. Calls to him are forbidden, a parcel with warm clothes for him was not accepted and was returned to his relatives. In March 2024, the court sentenced Ihar Karnei to 3 years of imprisonment, accusing him of participation in an «extremist formation» for cooperation with the news websote of the Belarusian Association of Journalists.
