Former political prisoner and journalist Ihar Karnei has received a demand to urgently pay the costs of his detention in a pre-trial detention centre in 2023, when he held the status of a suspect in a criminal case. A letter demanding payment of 63 roubles (1.5 base units) was sent to the journalist’s home address in Belarus by the Department of Forced Enforcement. Karnei himself was released and forcibly deported to Lithuania in June 2025, following a visit to Minsk by Trump’s special envoy, Keith Kellogg.
