The 2nd Western District Military Court has sentenced journalist Farida Kurbangaleeva in absentia to eight years in prison on charges of spreading “false information” about the military (Article 207.3, Part 2, Clause “d” of the Criminal Code) and justifying terrorism (Article 205.2, Part 2 of the Criminal Code). Her co-defendant, Alexei Baranovsky—who is fighting on Ukraine’s side with the Freedom of Russia Legion—was also sentenced in absentia, receiving six years in prison. The case stemmed from an interview Kurbangaleeva conducted with Baranovsky, published in May 2024. Later, additional charges were brought against her based on several posts she made on her Telegram channel. The Prosecutor General’s Office has requested that the Czech authorities extradite the journalist to Russia.
