In the morning, the Federal Security Service reported the detention of Evan Gershkovich, the correspondent of The Wall Street Journal, a US citizen, in Yekaterinburg. The Federal Security Service said that the journalist was suspected of espionage (Article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), while the Kremlin said that he had been «caught red-handed». In the afternoon, Gershkovich was taken to the Lefortovo District Court of Moscow, which quickly decided to place him in a pre-trial detention centre for two months. The hearing was held in closed session and journalists were not allowed to attend.
