In February, the leader of the movement Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan (DVK), declared extremist in Kazakhstan, called on his supporters to go to protest rallies on March 1. On March 1, the places designated for the protest actions were surrounded by police. Emurat Bapi, a journalist from DAT.Obshchestvennaya pozitsiya [Civic Position), together with dozens of other people, was detained on the approaches to Republic Square in Almaty. Radio Azattyk reported that police officers carefully checked the identification of the journalists who covered the protests and detentions and took several people in jackets with the label “Press” to an area next to the square.
