Pivovarova, who was fired from her post as editor-in-chief in November 2020, was accused of embezzlement (Part 3 of Article 160 of the Criminal Code). The journalist was searched, after which she was hospitalised, having had a stroke. On 24 February, after being discharged, Pivovarova appeared for questioning and was readmitted to the hospital. The dismissal and persecution of the journalist is related to her criticisms of local authorities. More than 100 journalists from different regions signed an appeal in her defence.
