The Leninsky District Court of Kursk sentenced Denis Shaikin, former publisher of MK Chernozemye, to two years in a penal colony. He was found guilty of extortion on a large scale (Paragraph D of Part 2 of Article 163 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The court also ruled that Shaikin must pay RUB 100,000 as compensation for moral damage to the victim. The journalist pleads not guilty, he announced an indefinite hunger strike «until complete acquittal and release». The case against Shaikin was initiated in September 2020 — he was accused of extorting RUB 400,000 from the owner of Proekt Svezhy Khleb LLC Yevgeny Levant for not publishing material about the company.
