On July 23, in Arzamas, Nizhny Novgorod Region, the guards of an illegal dump site attacked environmentalists and journalists who came there to inspect the site. The eco-activist Dmitry Trunin was approached by the owner of the site Dmitry Vagin, who had leased it to the Arzamas branch of the Moscow-based LLC MSK-NT, after the organisation began to dump waste on the site without the appropriate permit, and the entrepreneur failed to evict the tenants. The environmentalists took a film crew from the program By The Way with them for the inspection. The guards beat up Trunin, the cameraman, the journalist and a representative of the site owner. On the instructions of the head of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin, a case was opened under Article 144 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (obstruction of the lawful professional activities of journalists, involving violence).
