The former correspondent of the republican Kazakh-language newspaper 'Jas Alash' Askhat Asan was called to the police as a witness in a criminal case under article 174 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan («Arousing social, national, ancestral, racial, class or religious discord»). The reason for instituting criminal proceedings was the publication that stated that in Kazakhstan, «human rights are violated», «no institutions are protecting the interests of society», and notes that «all this is the fruit of the created kleptocratic authoritarian regime».
