On January 14, police searched the apartment of an environmental activist Artyom Sochnev, a witness with the right to defence in a case of incitement of social hatred. During the search, his camera was seized. His relatives have expressed concern about what is happening, as the ongoing police actions, in their opinion, indicate that Sochnev may soon be given the status of a suspect. A pre-trial criminal investigation was opened in connection with Sochnev's picket in support of the Zhanaozen protesters, during which he went live on social media and speculated about the situation in the country and the causes of the incident.
