Minsk Regional Court passed the verdict in the criminal case of the independent news agency BelaPAN. Judge Viachaslau Tuleika sentenced the former deputy director of BelaPAN Andrey Aleksandrov to 14 years in prison. He was charged under four articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus: establishment and leadership of an extremist formation (Part 1 of Article 361-1), tax evasion (Part 2 of Article 243), high treason (Part 1 of Article 356), «preparation of at least 260 persons for participation in gross violations by paying fines, bills for meals in detention centers, services of lawyers and other» (Part 2 of Article 342) between August 14, 2020, and January 12, 2021. The trial was held behind closed doors. Andrey Aleksandrov was detained on January 12, 2021. His girlfriend Iryna Zlobina was also detained along with him — she was sentenced to 9 years in prison on charges of treason and preparation of persons to participate in group actions, grossly violating public order.
