On October 18, the editor of the Tatar-Bashkir service of Radio Liberty Alsu Kurmasheva was detained in Kazan on the case of refusal to register as a «foreign agent» (Part 3 of Article 330.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, up to 5 years of imprisonment). This is the first criminal case against a journalist under this article. Kurmasheva, who lives in Prague with her husband and two children, came to Moscow for family matters on May 20, 2023. She was detained on June 2 while waiting for a return flight to return to the Czech Republic. Kazan airport officials confiscated both of her passports. Kurmasheva was fined for failing to register her U.S. citizenship with Russian authorities. She was waiting for her passports to be returned to her when the new charge was announced on October 18. On October 23, a court in Kazan arrested Kurmasheva until December 5. The court session was held in closed mode, the press was allowed only for the announcement of the operative part.
