Additional information:
The Yoshkar-Ola City Court fined local journalist Alexey Seregin RUB 5,000 in a case of incitement to hatred or hostility (Article 20.3.1 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Russian Federation). The Prosecutor’s Office initiated the case on the basis of The Ministry of Internal Affairs materials because of a comment left by Seregin to a July publication in his own Telegram channel «Nothing will happen in Mari El». The commentary said that although peaceful protest in Russia is «meaningless from the point of view of achieving its stated goals, the law enforcers are getting screwed for even one such protester taking to the streets». He expressed satisfaction that the «bastards» who persecute people for political reasons «got punished by their superiors». The police saw Seregin’s comment as a negative assessment of «a group of people united on the basis of their affiliation with law enforcement agencies».
