The police detained the journalist when he was covering a protest in Mogilev (which continues in Belarus after the August 9 presidential elections). He was taken to the police department, where he was drawn up a report for violation of the law on mass events (Article 23.34 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Republic of Belarus). He was placed in the detention centre for two days until the trial. His family was not informed about his detention – for almost a day, his relatives and colleagues did not know where the journalist was. On September 1, the court found him guilty and arrested him for eight days. After the court decision was announced, Alexander Sobolevsky, in protest, went on a hunger strike for the entire period of his arrest.
