On July 2, the court in Almaty satisfied the claim for recovery of compensation for copyright infringement of the Republican Public Association «Kazakhstan Copyright Society» (KazAK) against the owner of The-village-kz.com — Akyn Media LLP. The claim was filed in connection with the use of 10 images of the famous photographer Maksim Zolotukhin, who concluded an agreement with KazAK on transferring the management of property rights of right holders on a collective basis. KazAK demanded to recover KZT 7 million 014 thousand 800 tenge (KZT 369,200 per one use) from the media owner for 19 uses of the images without Zolotukhin’s permission. On October 28, the court of appeal reduced the amount of compensation almost 10 times. The images taken by the journalists to illustrate the information materials were publicly available on the Internet.
