Galina Timchenko’s phone was found to have Pegasus spyware installed on it in February 2023 while she was in Berlin, two weeks after Meduza was declared an «undesirable organisation» in Russia and days before a confidential meeting of Russian independent journalists in exile, including Meduza’s management. The spyware in Timchenko’s phone was only discovered on June 23, 2023.
