The trial on the case of journalists Vladimir and Nargiz Severny, suspected of extortion (Part 4 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan) began in the specialised inter-district court on criminal cases of Almaty. According to the prosecution, the spouses extorted KZT 15 million from a businesswoman from Aktau in April this year and KZT 200 thousand from an Almaty businessman in June 2019 for not publishing negative materials. The journalists and their lawyers deny the charges. The defence claims that Nargiz Severnaya appealed to the Aktau philanthropist with a request to help her and her husband in solving the flat issue. Vladimir and Nargiz Severny refused to be tried by jury and together with their lawyers intend to seek an acquittal, as they believe that there is not a single convincing proof of their guilt in the case.
