Chernov became a defendant in a criminal case on incitement to hatred (Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The reason was a video in which he linked the accident at the Listvyazhaya mine to electoral fraud. According to the investigation, the video incites hatred and humiliates the dignity of «persons belonging to the social group of federal and regional authorities, as well as representatives of the social group of law enforcement agencies.» In 2021, Chernov was arrested under a similar administrative article, which allowed the authorities to prosecute him under a criminal article.
