Novaya Novgorodskaya Gazeta, the oldest independent newspaper in the Novgorod region, has been shut down. As Sergey Brutman, editor-in-chief of the newspaper, explained in an address to readers, the newspaper’s authors «served you for 23 years for a mere penny, insufficient for survival, while they sought sustenance wherever they could». «But there are absolutely no funds now for the media itself», — he noted. Another reason is censorship — Brutman noted that «the free speech of the Russian media is banned and punished». He cited statistics on political persecution, including against journalists.
