The police detained Kalinin as he was leaving the cafe in a cab: he was allegedly swearing and disrupting public order. According to Kalinin, police officers called him an organizer of the September 18 rallies against unfair elections. On September 20, a court in St. Petersburg arrested Kalinin for three days under Part 2 of Article 20.1 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Russian Federation for petty hooliganism. Kalinin was held for two nights at the police station until the trial.
