Leninsky District Court of Kursk sentenced Denis Shaykin, former publisher of MK Chernozemye, to two years in a penal colony. He was found guilty of extortion on a large scale (Paragraph D of Part 2 of Article 163 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The court also ruled that Shaykin must pay RUB 100,000 as compensation for moral damage to the victim. The journalist pleaded not guilty, he announced an indefinite hunger strike «until complete acquittal and release». The case against Shaykin was initiated in September 2020 — he was accused of extorting RUB 400,000 from the owner of Proekt Svezhiy Khleb JSC Yevgeny Levant for not publishing material about the company.
