A resident of Karakalpakstan told Asiaterra that Abdimalik Khojanazarov, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Akmangit Tany (Dawn of Akmangit), was hospitalized after being abused by law enforcement officers. The prosecutor forced him to write an explanatory statement that he allegedly fell down and was thus injured. Protests in Karakalpakstan began on July 1, 2022, following the submission for public discussion of a new draft version of the Constitution of Uzbekistan in which the word «sovereign» was removed from the description of the status of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and reference to the right of the republic to secede from Uzbekistan was also removed.
