Artyom Sochnev, an environmental activist from Stepnogorsk, was summoned for interrogation by the police as part of a pre-trial criminal investigation under an article on inciting social hatred. The case was initiated after Sochnev was detained on January 4, when he went to the square to hold an individual picket in support of the Zhanaozen protesters. During the interrogation he was also asked about the Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan movement, which is banned in Kazakhstan. Sochnev is being tried as a witness with the right to defence.
