Between March and May 2021, the Ministry of National Security officers repeatedly intimidated and threatened the relatives of Rozybai Jumamuradov, a reporter of the independent Vienna-based news website Chronicle of Turkmenistan, and Devlet Bayhan, a journalist who works with the Chronicle of Turkmenistan, according to the media. In early May, security officers summoned Jumamuradov's 14-year-old nephew and questioned the teenager about his contacts with his uncle, shouted at him, threatened to put him and his family in jail, and kill Jumamuradov. On April 21, unknown persons repeatedly called Jumamuradov's brother and threatened to kill his family if they did not stop communicating with the journalist. Later, national security officers summoned and interrogated the journalist's brother, asking questions about his contacts with Jumamuradov.
