The security officials detained the journalist when he was covering a protest rally against the presidential election results. He was taken to the police department, where he was charged with participation in an unauthorized event (Article 23.34 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Republic of Belarus) and held in the detention centre for three days until the trial. On November 11, the court found Lyava guilty based on the police report and arrested him for 15 days.
