The Frunzenskiy District Court of Vladimir sued the journalist for a year and six months of a suspended sentence for a publication with calls for reprisals against members of the United Russia political party. Stepanov was sentenced to one and half years of suspended imprisonment with a probationary period and a ban on administrating social networks and websites for two years. Under part 2 of Article 280 of the Criminal Code, the criminal case on public calls for extremist activities was considered in a special order since Stepanov admitted guilt and repented.
