In October 2019, journalists from the newspaper “Proekt” (Project) faced threats after investigating the activities of Russian mercenaries and political operatives in Africa and the Middle East allegedly associated with businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin. Journalists received "obscene, harsh and unpleasant" threats of physical violence via email, according the newspaper’s editor-in-chief Roman Badanin. Their Facebook, Telegram and Google accounts also faced hacking attempts.
