Rovshan Mamedli, an independent journalist working in Azerbaijan, was sentenced to 30 days administrative arresst for "disobeying orders from police". Mamedli was arrested in Baku on 23rd January 2017. Police claim that he used profane language while speaking on the telephone and was arrested for ignoring police orders to refrrain from this. After the arrest he was detained without connection to the outside world for 24 hours, after which he was sentenced by the Baku regional court. According to his lawyer, Mamedli was denied the right to appoint his own lawyer. They are currently planning an appeal.
