On 22nd May 2017, the prominent independent journalist Nijat Amiraslanov, well-known for his critical reports for local and regional media on poverty in the region and corruption among local bureaucrats, was arrested in the Gazakh region in north-west Azerbaijan. On 23rd May 2017 Amiraslanov appeared before the Gazakh oblast court, which found him guilty under article 535.1 of the code of administrative offences ("disobeying the police") and sentenced him to 30 days administrative arrest.
