In December 2016, after the Tupolev Tu-154 plane crash in the Black Sea, Arkady Babchenko posted on social media. After the publication of the post, some federal media organisations started a campaign against the journalist. A journalist for “Komsomolskaya Pravda” demanded to open a criminal case against Babchenko, noting that "his friends would put Babchenko against a wall [to be shot]", and State Duma representative Vitaly Milonov called for Babchenko to be stripped of his citizenship.
